At this point in 2015, this should no longer be an issue. This should have only been the case to make up for bad AI which was prone to getting itself killed. Combat becomes an infinitely repeatable pattern of send your companions in to soak up enemy fire while you kill everything and revive their corpses after combat. If companions are essential, it turns them into baby sitters for the player. I am disappointed no one at Bethesda seems to have the common sense to realize this since it seems like such a simple concept for most of the modding community at least. Having essential companions simplifies and homogenizes the gameplay in a way that while perhaps okay for some, will turn a lot of others off of it.
